Memoir requires writers to unpack layer upon layer of stories, memories and feelings; to open themselves to insights about themselves as characters and as narrators; and to devise techniques for telling the story that they discover during the writing process. For this new class taught by one of Politics and Prose veteran teachers, Michaele Weissman has created a series of in-class exercises designed to help memoirists go beyond the usual limits of non-fiction writing. Exercises will help students recognize, comprehend, play with, and combine four essential elements of the memoir form: Story. Narrator. Language. Structure. Participants need not be actively working on a memoir, but experience writing or struggling to write first-person material in a creative fashion is desirable.
Coaching
Michaele coaches private writing clients eager to take their work to new levels. Several of her students have successfully published books.

…Michaele’s enthusiasm bubbled up and helped fill the room as she guided us to enter the world of written imagery. This in-love-with-the-world attitude, coupled with several original approaches to stimulate vulnerable writing…led all of us to work hard and feel comfortable sharing our work.
